my philosophy of education
Why I teach...
|
I know it sounds cliché, but teaching is in my blood. My twin brother and all of my sister-in-laws are educators.
I teach because when I was a kid I loved school. I loved learning and still love being the learner. I enjoy making school fun and I'm always looking for new ways to keep up with the latest technology. I also want to share with my school kids what my two boys get to see in me every day. I hope that be that shining light in some of my kid's lives. I also enjoy building a family of community learners. The following components are the cornerstone of my philosophy of education. These four components (1)building relationships, (2)positive praise, (3)active engagement, and (4)involving families are the components I have tested and today they still stand as the cornerstone in my classroom to ensure student success. Building relationships within the classroom is something that should start the first week of school. It may seem like something small, but it can make a huge impact. When relationships are built among the students, outsiders will feel a positive energy when they enter the classroom. People who enter the room will see students solving problems amongst themselves, and praising one another. Relationships must occur, and be maintained, between the teacher and students. When this occurs, the two are able to build trust which ensures student success. Trust is the axis that relationships are built upon. Positive praise should occur early on in the classroom. Kids thrive on positivity. The teacher should model how to write affirmations, celebrations, or just a positive note to another teacher or student. Then the students should practice writing positive notes to one another. Eventually, it will begin to spread like wildfire throughout the school. Keeping kids actively engaged will help manage the classroom by allowing the students to think critically and work together as a team. Discipline problems are kept at a minimal when kids are actively engaged. Administration should be able to walk in anytime and see students enthusiastically raising their hands to answer a question, hear the room bursting with conversation, or see students re-teaching the lesson. In order to ensure success, though, the educator needs to be highly organized, actively monitoring, and have lots of energy. Families need to be kept abreast of what is happening in the classroom. See-Saw is a great tool to use in keeping families connected. Parents are able to see exactly what their child is doing in class at any time during the day. The parent can also comment or like their child’s work. When parents are involved, it makes for a more positive year. |

It is my mission to create a safe and positive learning environment for every child in my classroom so that they leave College Hills Elementary School with a love of learning and the skills needed to prepare them for a competitive job market.
